Goa: Panaji most expensive destination in India

With an average rate of $104 for the most affordable double room, the city of Panaji is ranked as the most expensive destination.

NEW DELHI – Panaji, the capital of the state of Goa, is the most expensive tourist destination in India, according to a survey conducted by TravelMag.com.

The survey compared the cost of hotel accommodation across 20 of the most popular destinations in India during December 2016. December is India’s peak season for tourism and, as a consequence, this is also the time of year when hotel rates in the country’s most visited areas are at their highest.

Only hotels rated at least 4 stars and located in the city centre or close to the beach were taken into account for the survey.

With an average rate of $104 for the most affordable double room, the city of Panaji is ranked as the most expensive destination. Just a few dollars cheaper are the country’s largest city, Mumbai, and India’s capital, New Delhi, which came second and third in the survey, with average rates of $101 and $97, respectively.

The famous beach town of Calangute in North Goa emerged as the 6th most expensive destination with an average of $84 per night for the least expensive double room.

At the cheaper end of the scale are Bengaluru, the capital of India’s southern Karnataka state, and Amritsar, located in the northwestern state of Punja. In both destinations visitors should find a 4-star hotel for well below $50 per night.

The following table shows the 10 most expensive destinations in India for hotel bookings. The prices shown reflect the average rate for each location’s cheapest available double room in accommodations rated at least 4 stars, for the period spanning 1-31 December 2016.
