TAT and AirAsia named winners of Spice Up the Sky with Thai Design competition

The chosen winner in the Amazing Thailand – Amazing Destination theme, whose design will decorate AirAsia's new aircraft, was Cherdsak Moeykanmak with his design titled “Yak-Cute”, which used the iconic giants from Wat Pho and Wat Arun to highlight Thailand’s unique architectural style.

BANKGKOK – The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) and Thai AirAsia have joined together to announce the winners of the “Spice Up the Sky with Thai Design” competition both for the theme of the Amazing Thailand-Amazing Destination and Amazing Thailand-Amazing Culture with the 2 winning designs to decorate Thai AirAsia airplanes by this year’s end to promote Thailand’s amazing travel attractions to local and international travellers alike.

The chosen winner in the Amazing Thailand – Amazing Destination theme was Cherdsak Moeykanmak with his design titled “Yak-Cute”, which used the iconic giants from Wat Pho and Wat Arun to highlight Thailand’s unique architectural style. Showcasing the two giants in an endearing, modern way, Cherdsak’s “Yak-Cute” title directly translates to “Cute Giant”. On top of showing off the country’s history and culture, the design also underlines the Thai people’s playful and friendly nature and their readiness to welcome visitors.

For Amazing Thailand – Amazing Culture, Narathip Paspirom’s “Thai Culture, Have a Visit” took the top honour for its modern graphical take on Thai patterns, Thai textiles, temples, elephants and other iconic images of the Kingdom; such as, Loi Krathong, perfectly reflecting Thailand’s vibrancy and liveliness. The design was chosen with the belief that once painted on an AirAsia plane, it would turn it into a vessel clearly made for fun.

Mr. Sugree Sithivanich, TAT Deputy Governor for Marketing Communications, explained that the competition was initiated to allow Thai people to use their creativity to entice foreign visitors to experience the wonders of the country. He said the idea for the project came from the realisation that all Thais likely want to be a part of inviting international guests to the nation.

The competition also provided an opportunity for TAT to promote its new Amazing Thailand logo, which now features a smile to symbolise the friendliness of the Thai people. Once the project concludes, Thai AirAsia will have a total 2 of airplanes promoting travel in the Kingdom using TAT’s imagery.

Mr. Banyat Hansakul, Director of Engineering for Thai AirAsia, relayed congratulations from the airline to the 2 winners and made known their designs would be painted onto Thai AirAsia Airbus A320-200s flying both domestically and internationally by the end of 2016.

TAT and AirAsia invite everyone to stay tuned for when these designs are finally on display and if you find yourself on one of the 2 planes, feel free to snap a photo and share it on social media to promote the talent of the Thai people and to take part in inviting foreign travellers to experience Thailand’s charms.
