Tasmanian Government backs business events

Business Events Tasmania (BET) Chief Executive Officer Stuart Nettlefold said, “this significant investment shows that State Government has great confidence in the business events sector in Tasmania, representing a 23% increase to core funding provided annually to BET”.

The State Government has on 26 May announced in its 2016-17 budget, an additional $600,000 in funding over four years to increase Tasmania’s share of the high yielding business events market.

Following the announcement, Business Events Tasmania (BET) Chief Executive Officer Stuart Nettlefold said, “this significant investment shows that State Government has great confidence in the business events sector in Tasmania, representing a 23% increase to core funding provided annually to BET”.

The additional $150,000 pa will take our annual State Government funding over to $790,000 pa.

It’s great to see the potential of our sector is being recognised at this level and it demonstrates the current strength of the industry in Tasmania.”

The business event delegate is the highest spending in the visitor economy, a fact that hasn’t been lost on the State Government in their push to see targeted growth in the sector.

In 2015, Tasmania’s business event sector contributed $132 million to the state’s economy and visiting delegate numbers grew significantly, up 42 per cent from the previous year.

These figures reinforce Tasmania’s strong appeal as a conference destination.”

The additional funding will be used to contribute to our northern representation to build regional business event capacity, research, marketing and communication activities, and to broaden BET’s capabilities in international markets.”

The increase in funding will have a positive impact on Tasmania’s economy. Business events provide direct economic value and offer many legacy benefits not directly measurable that underpin knowledge creation and exchange as well as innovation and investment opportunities,” Nettlefold said.
