TCEB announces Thailand has been dropped from WHO’s list of countries affected by Zika virus

Thailand was one of several countries listed by the WHO as being at risk of a Zika outbreak back in February 2016. However, there have been no new cases of the mosquito-borne virus reported in Thailand.

The Thailand Convention and Exhibition Bureau, or TCEB, is pleased to announce that Thailand has recently been dropped from the World Health Organisation’s (WHO) list of countries affected by the Zika virus.

Thailand was one of several countries listed by the WHO as being at risk of a Zika outbreak back in February 2016. However, there have been no new cases of the mosquito-borne virus reported in Thailand. According to Thailand’s Ministry of Public Health, there were only five cases of Zika recorded in the kingdom during the period from 2012 to 2016, and these low figures are not enough to constitute an outbreak.

Since February, all business events scheduled for Thailand have gone ahead as normal in all areas of the country with no reports of disruption or cancellations due to the virus, which is carried by the Aedes mosquito.

To ensure the safety of the public, Thailand has put several initiatives in place so that locals and visitors were safe and to prevent the spread of the Virus. As well as treating areas where the Aedes mosquitos could breed, the Ministry of Public Health put out warnings not to travel to potentially infected areas, to wear clothing that protected them from mosquito bites and to use repellent when going outside.

In addition, Thailand recently passed the 2015 disease prevention act which came into effect in March 2016. This has enhanced the nation’s ongoing efforts to implement disease prevention protocol in line with the International Health Regulation 2005.
