Airport expansion to help boost international visitation to Tasmania

ATEC and Tourism Tasmania have been working closely to build these international markets and held TasBound, a commercial business-to-business program which has attracted 30 international travel buyers who will meet with Tasmanian travel suppliers.

The Australian Tourism Export Council (ATEC) has welcomed the announcement of the extension of Hobart Airport, which will open up access to more carriers and help increase the appeal of Tasmania as an international destination.

This is a timely announcement recognising the growth of international visitors to Tasmania, which, with 20% growth in 2015, recorded the largest increase in international visitor numbers of any Australian state,” ATEC Managing Director, Peter Shelley said.

With 211,000 international tourists visiting Tasmania last year alone, there is no doubt that the State’s global reputation is growing, particularly in markets such as the United States and China which are now their largest sources of international visitors.

ATEC and Tourism Tasmania have been working closely to build these international markets and held TasBound, a commercial business-to-business program which has attracted 30 international travel buyers who will meet with Tasmanian travel suppliers.

TasBound is a valuable opportunity for the Tasmanian tourism industry to  identify travel experiences and travel itineraries which can be assembled and promoted in more than 20 international travel markets.”

Tasbound took place in Hobart and included a range of tours throughout the State providing international buyers with first hand experience of the amazing tourism product on offer to the international traveller.

We welcome this announcement as another way to build on the success and momentum we are already seeing in attracting international travellers to Tasmania.
