Tourism New Zealand celebrates conference wins worth $25 million

Tourism New Zealand is celebrating its most successful year of conference wins to date – acknowledging the group of people who made them happen.

The Tourism New Zealand Business Events National Awards, held in Auckland on 8 October, celebrated the success New Zealand has had in the business events sector and acknowledged the contribution of key industry and sector leaders.

A group of 21 business events ambassadors from across New Zealand were recognised for their achievement in bidding for events which will see over 10,500 delegates visit the country in the coming years – bringing an estimated $25 million to the New Zealand economy.

Tourism New Zealand Director of Trade, PR and Major Events René de Monchy says it’s great to see New Zealand successfully bidding for and winning international association conferences.

Much of this comes down to the influential sector leaders who are putting their hands up to champion their field of expertise to attract key conferences to our shores.”

The Business Events National Awards are about creating lasting relationships with these individuals so that they can continue to bid for international conferences and encourage their colleagues to do so as well,” says Mr de Monchy.

The international business events sector, particularly international conferences and incentives, holds great potential to attract new high value international visitors to New Zealand.

International delegates present significant value for the country spending an estimated $304 per night which is almost double the average spend per night for all international visitors according to the International Visitor Survey,” says Mr de Monchy.

Tourism New Zealand has significantly increased its work in the business events sector and in the year ended June 2015 achieved a new milestone of 58 international conference bids for the year. If successful these bids will see an additional $97 million injected into the New Zealand economy.

It really has been a record year for the sector, with more bids for events than ever before. This year’s focus will be on building on this momentum with higher targets for both conferences and incentive bids.
