Christ University to host PATA Youth Symposium September 2015

Under the theme “Human Resources Challenges and Opportunities for Tourism’s Next Generation”, the Symposium will commence prior to PATA Travel Mart 2015 and aims to attract hundreds of young professionals and students from overseas and around India.

BANGKOK – The Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA) Human Capital Development Committee will organise a PATA Youth Symposium on the morning of Friday, September 4, at Christ University, Bangalore, India. Under the theme “Human Resources Challenges and Opportunities for Tourism’s Next Generation”, the Symposium will commence prior to PATA Travel Mart 2015 and aims to attract hundreds of young professionals and students from overseas and around India.

Mr Mario Hardy, PATA CEO said, “On behalf of PATA, I would like to express our sincerest appreciation to Christ University in hosting the PATA Youth Symposium 2015. This is a unique opportunity for local and international university students to engage and interact with experienced industry professionals on various issues and topics. The Association is committed to supporting the development of today’s students as it is the strongest way of ensuring a sustainable future for our industry.”

The programme was developed with guidance from Dr Chris Bottrill, Chairman of the PATA Human Capital Development (HCD) Committee and Dean, Faculty of Global and Community Studies, Capilano University. Dr Bottrill noted that the exceptionally strong tourism growth in South and South East Asia in the coming years provides significant opportunity for future generations of tourism professionals. Through a combination of presentations from leading PATA professionals and feedback from all participants we will learn together and enhance our understanding of emerging issues, challenges and ways to engage and prosper in the growth and the changes that lie ahead.

Speakers include Dr Chris Bottrill, Chairman of the PATA HCD Committee; Y. Bhg. Dato’ Haji Azizan Noordin Dato’ Haji Azizan Noordin, Deputy Director General (International Promotions), Tourism Malaysia; Mr Philip Schaetz, Senior Vice President of Sales and Marketing, Dorsett Hospitality International, Hong Kong SAR and Mr Bert van Walbeek, Vice President Area Business Development Asia Pacific, Safehotels Alliance AB, Thailand.

The symposium will include plenary talks on various topics including:

  • Human Resources Challenges and Opportunities for Tourism’s Next Generation
  • Social Media Management vs Traditional in Tourism and Hospitality
  • Preparation and Opportunity within Tourism and Hospitality
  • Special Destination Focus: Malaysia

All participants will also share their views in roundtable discussions on the following topics:

  • What do you believe makes a great tourism employee?
  • How will your job in tourism change in the next ten years?
  • In what ways could we enhance respect for a career in tourism?

Dr Fr Thomas C. Mathew, Vice Chancellor, Christ University added: “The Travel, Tourism and Hospitality Industry has attained a significant position in the Academia and the Business world. An effective human resource management and development is critical for the success of the industry. An efficient and creative management of tourism based business has the potential to turnaround the local and national economy. We hope that this Symposium enable evolving of effective human resource practices to successfully endeavor in future global competitions.”

In recent years, the PATA Human Capital Development Committee has organised successful educational events at various institutions including UCSI University Sarawak Campus (April 2010), Institute for Tourism Studies (September 2010), Beijing International Studies University (April 2011) and Taylor’s University, Kuala Lumpur (April 2012), Lyceum of the Philippines University, Manila (September 2012), Thammasat University, Bangkok (April 2013), Chengdu Polytechnic, Huayuan Campus, China (September 2013), Sun Yat-sen University, Zhuhai Campus, China, (May 2014), Royal University of Phnom Penh (September 2014) and Sichuan Tourism School, Chengdu, (April 2015).
