All hands on deck at Glebe Island for Boat Show

Over the next few days at Glebe Island, hundreds of watercraft, from kayaks to speed boats, 151 exhibitor stands and an external 600 square metre marquee for a dining lounge, will be installed in preparation for the crowd-drawing annual event.

SYDNEY, Australia – As the 48th Sydney International Boat Show draws near, various crews are busy transforming Glebe Island and Darling Harbour into a floating and indoor show for the largest recreational marine event in the southern hemisphere.

Over the next few days at Glebe Island, hundreds of watercraft, from kayaks to speed boats, 151 exhibitor stands and an external 600 square metre marquee for a dining lounge, will be installed in preparation for the crowd-drawing annual event.

It’s all hands on deck as we welcome back one of the world’s leading boat shows,” said Malu Barrios, General Manager of Sydney Exhibition Centre @ Glebe Island (SEC@GI).

It is also one of our most logistically challenging events and we’re up for it, what with boats of different sizes as well as all manner of boating gear being moved into the full footprint of the Centre including Hall 5. Always popular with visitors, Historic Boats, including one power boosted by a World War II plane engine will feature heavily this year after an absence in 2014. And there’s even a hefty penguin submarine to showcase!” she added.

Running from 30 July to 3 August this year, the Boat Show has been an eagerly anticipated fixture in the event calendar since 1968, catering to the Australian passion for the outdoors and boating lifestyle. The Show’s two great locations – an indoor venue at SEC@GI and floating displays at Darling Harbour’s Cockle Bay Marina – offer show-goers of all ages and expertise a multi-faceted experience combining inspiration, education, and entertainment.

Reflecting the event’s popularity, show times for the marina have been extended an extra two hours this year – from 10am now until 8pm – matching the exhibition hall times at Glebe Island.

We’re all geared up for the hustle and bustle of the Boat Show, the largest that the Centre hosts. The free bus service from Central Station to Glebe Island, plus the free ferry shuttles connecting the two venues, will be running as usual. We’re excited to welcome the brand new Beatrice Bush pontoon, which will be moored at SEC@GI to provide an additional wharf for the extra ferries needed to transfer the large number of visitors to this event,“ said Ms Barrios.

Launched last week by Captain Cook Cruises, the 16-metre roofed pontoon is the first its kind on Sydney Harbour – it’s a rapidly deployable mobile ferry pontoon able to access anywhere in the harbour where there is no passenger wharf.

The major exhibitors – leading brands and manufacturers such as YamahaMercury, and Blakes Marine – are all returning to the Boat Show, as well as the popular MyBoatingLife.com.au Entertainment Precinct, the Boating Safety Zone and the LifeJacket Lounge.

This year’s President’s breakfast on Thursday 30 July will be held at SEC@GI for the first time. Taking place at the wharf-side LifeJacket Lounge, the event will once again mark the official opening of the Boat Show, featuring keynote speaker the Hon. Duncan Gay, Minister for Roads, Maritime and Freight.
