TTNQ and Cairns Regional Council announce Great Barrier Reef Masters Games partnership

More than 2000 sportsmen and women aged 30 and above are expected to enter the event, which will feature 18 sports over an extended four-day program combining sports and entertainment over a fun filled long weekend.

Cairns Regional Council and Tourism Tropical North Queensland are pleased to announce a joint partnership to fund the 2015 Great Barrier Reef Masters Games, to be held August 13 – 16 in Cairns this year.
 
More than 2000 sportsmen and women aged 30 and above are expected to enter the event, which will feature 18 sports over an extended four-day program combining sports and entertainment over a fun filled long weekend.
 
Mayor Bob Manning said the 2013 games showed great promise for both sports tourism and events and it is for this reason that Council and TTNQ decided to continue the games under new Cairns based management.
 
The Great Barrier Reef Masters Games provides a fantastic opportunity for local sporting organisations to be involved in delivering a major sporting event and Council looks forward to establishing this home grown event well into the future.”
 
We are looking forward to hosting the competitors and showcasing our extensive sporting infrastructure including award-winning venues.
 
CEO of Tourism Tropical North Queensland, Alex de Waal said the event will be a great opportunity to showcase the region’s stunning natural beauty while also highlighting the region’s professional capacity to host a variety of events.
 
The event will introduce new visitors to the region and also encourage them to explore some of our attractions such as the Great Barrier Reef and Australia’s Wet Tropics Rainforests while they’re here.”
 
The partnerships between Tourism and Events Queensland, Cairns Regional Council and Tourism Tropical North Queensland will deliver a fantastic event that will highlight the region’s ability to host major multi-sport events.
 
The Games will feature competitions in baseball, basketball, cricket, touch football, oz tag, squash, softball, netball, futsal, pickleball, dragon boating volleyball, hockey, running, soccer, athletics, bodybuilding and tennis.
 
The Games have also received support from the Queensland Government.
