Saab selected by the Airports Authority of India to deploy A-SMGCS at five airports

Saab will be deploying its A3000 A-SMGCS, Saab multilateration and SR-3 Surface Movement Radars (SMR) to Ahmedabad, Amritsar, Guwahati, Jaipur, and Lucknow Airports.

EAST SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Defense and security company Saab has been selected by the Airports Authority of India (AAI) to deploy Advanced – Surface Movement Guidance & Control Systems (A-SMGCS) at five airports in India. The Saab A-SMGCS will enhance situational awareness and runway safety at these growing airports.

Saab will be deploying its A3000 A-SMGCS, Saab multilateration and SR-3 Surface Movement Radars (SMR) to Ahmedabad, Amritsar, Guwahati, Jaipur, and Lucknow Airports. The A3000 A-SMGCS will fuse multilateration and SMR surveillance data to provide air traffic controllers with precise surveillance of the airports’ runways and taxiways, along with the identification of aircraft. In addition, the A-SMGCS will feature Safety Logic runway incursion detection and alerting algorithms to provide controllers with advanced warnings of potential runway incursions. The A-SMGCS will also include functionality for Airport-Collaborative Decision Making (A-CDM) initiatives.

Saab will deliver to the AAI the latest in modern airport surface safety systems that will enable the airport to reduce runway incursions while maximizing the use of runways and taxiways,” said Anders Carp, Head of Saab’s business unit Traffic Management. “The A3000 is a reliable, flexible platform that will use the most proven airport surface surveillance equipment to provide controllers with a clear picture of airport traffic and advanced warnings of potential incursions.

Previously, Saab had deployed A-SMGCS to Chennai, Kolkata and Mumbai Airports and an A-SMGCS, multilateration and SMR to Indira Gandhi New Delhi Airport.

In our continuing focus on upgrading ANS Infrastructure to meet the anticipated air traffic growth, AAI has taken up the installation of A-SMGCS at 5 airports which will enhance the ground surveillance leading to improved access and enhanced safety of aircraft operations at these airports,” said Mr. V. Somasundaram, Board Member (Air Navigation Services), Airports Authority of India.

The A3000 is one of the industry’s most widely deployed A-SMGCS, with more than 40 sites around the world, including multiple locations in Europe (Finland, Ireland, Netherlands, Sweden, Turkey and more), Asia (China, India and Vietnam), South America (Brazil)  and the Middle East and North Africa (Egypt). Saab surface multilateration is in operation or being deployed to more than 60 sites around the world and its SR-3 is the industry’s only third generation, entirely solid state SMR.
