Initiative to save half a million plastic bottles per annum.
Premium Indian Ocean resort Atmosphere Kanifushi Maldives will begin producing its own bottled water on site from 1 November 2014, saving approximately 40,000 plastic bottles every month – or around 500,000 per annum. Through the use of an innovative EcoPure Waters bottling plant, the resort will eradicate the need to purchase water for guests externally, instead producing its own in high-quality reusable glass carafes.
Though tap water is generally considered safe to drink in the Maldives, drinking bottled water remains a universal precaution for travellers when abroad, no matter the destination. As of November, Atmosphere guests will be provided water freshly purified on site and served in premium pressure-moulded glass bottles that use a full onbound seal to ensure optimal hygienic standards.
“The introduction of the on-site purification plant will make a significant improvement to the resort’s environmental footprint,” says Dinesh Bhaskar, Director of Sales and Marketing at Atmosphere. “Though we recycle all plastics at the resort to ensure we remain as green as possible, the use of the glass bottles will negate the need for the plastic alternatives to be created in the first place. Our production process will also save around five litres of fresh water per bottle in comparison to the usual bottling process.”
As the lowest-lying country in the world with a highly sensitive ecosystem, the Maldives has always bound its tourism industry, currently generating 28% of the country’s GDP, by regulations that protect the ecosystems that the country is so heavily reliant upon to ensure future prosperity. The use of filtration systems such as that to be used at Atmosphere saves an estimated 20 million plastic bottles in the island nation every year.
