The exponential growth of activity and experiential travel in India

Thrillophilia.com, one of India's biggest online platforms to discover and book unique activities, tours and offbeat stays, has come up with an interesting survey on the state of Activity Travel in the year 2013.

BANGALORE – The new buzz in the travel world is Activity Travel. India has seen a huge shift in travel trends where the demand for activities and local experiences has grown by 250% in the last 4 years.

With tourists looking for a more holistic experience, Activity Travel entails making an emotional connect between the traveller and the destination through adventure, local culture and personalized experiences. Being an essential component of trip planning, it has resulted in the creation of several activity focussed travel companies.

Thrillophilia.com, one of India’s biggest online platforms to discover and book unique activities, tours and offbeat stays, has come up with an interesting survey on the state of Activity Travel in the year 2013. Serving around 2500+ travellers every month and with more than 2000+ experiences online, the company has carved a niche for themselves.

The study has come out with several notable discoveries. Predictably, Goa is the most desirable destination in the list of ‘India’s top 10 destinations with popular activities‘. Surprisingly, Kerala comes in second with the adventure hub, Uttarakhand, taking the third position. This is followed by Himachal Pradesh, Maharashtra, Karnataka and Rajasthan.

What’s more, in regard to the kind of activities people prefer in their tours, it was found that a good 42% favour day tours in the city with in-city activities. On the other hand, 38% like to go for wildlife and birding tours and 18% are in for adventure tours, out of which majority are into water sports.

Another interesting discovery according to the study was that there has been a huge rise in the luxury activities like yacht tours, wine tours, glamping, luxury train journeys etc. This can be attributed to the increase in disposable income among the middle class in metro cities and a jump in the affluent segment from the tier-II and tier-III cities.

Other prominent aspect of the survey states that with the rise of several online travel platforms, the number of families looking for activities in their tour has jumped by around 50%. While planning a tour, a good 46% of people give importance to destinations with kids-friendly activities.

A booming entrant in the travel sector is corporate outings. Due to the increased understanding of the potential value of outings with team building activities, corporate outings have gone up more than 300%.

The discerning traveller today demands more than just a regular tourist experience. With Activity Travel filling the gap and with an ever increasing range of exciting options, this sector has a bright future.
