Exploring the South of Borneo

A familiarization trip for post Meetings and Events Australia (MEA) 2014 Conference delegates from Australia over a 3-day program experiencing Sarawak’s very own business adventure offerings in Kuching.

KUCHING – A select group of Australian delegates were treated to a Bornean adventure participating in the recent South Borneo Quest (SBQ) in Kuching from the 18th to 20th May 2014. The bureau jumped at the opportunity to call upon a quest for potential Australian clients to explore the East of Malaysia.

A collaborative effort between Sarawak Convention Bureau (SCB) and Malaysia Convention and Exhibition Bureau (MyCEB), SBQ was a post familiarization trip in conjunction with the recent Meetings and Events Australia (MEA) Annual Conference 2014 held in Kuala Lumpur. The 3-day program was designed to showcase a Sarawak-style meeting destination for corporate events – with tremendous support from official partners, Diethelm Travel (Sarawak) and Hilton Kuching.

Equipped with an Explorer’s Handbook, the group was first introduced to the rich cultures of Sarawakians at the world renowned Sarawak Cultural Village. The next day, it was all about a close encounter with the Orangutans during the visit to Semenggoh Wildlife Centre and ‘Heart to Heart with the Orangutans’ CSR program that was held at the Matang Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre. Adventure was then the theme during kayaking trip for an hour and a half, up the Sarawak Kiri River through the headhunter’s village in the rainforest.

SCB Managing Director, Mike Cannon commented “This program serves as a great tool for experiencing the potential of a second tier destination such as Sarawak, a business destination offering elements of adventure, nature, culture and wildlife; and at the same time the opportunity to contribute back to the community through a CSR element. Further, it creates an opportunity for both the Australian and Sarawakian business events industry to work together.”

Another highlight was the traditional Bidayuh party at the Annah Rais Longhouse. Mr Chew Chang Guan, General Manager of SCB commented, “Apart from showcasing the special experience of a Sarawak style meeting in the jungles of Borneo, it also showcases the creative style of Sarawak as a business events destination – offering unique cultural experiences and the adventure of a lifetime outside the meeting room”.

The comments and the feedback SCB received were very positive and full of valuable input, with one of the delegates saying: “the program showcased a more laid back style of Malaysia as well as its heritage and beautiful landscapes and tradition”. To add, Lauren Hayward of Forum Group Events Australia said “Sarawak is an excellent destination option for an ‘adventure’ incentive”.
