Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre wins 10 more bids

The bid wins include two national, three regional and five international meetings with an expected total attendance of 10,000 plus delegates.

FRANKFURT – The Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre has announced the confirmation of 10 more events for 2014/16 with an expected total attendance of 10,000 plus delegates. The bid wins include two national, three regional and five international meetings namely the Equipment for use in Explosive Atmospheres (IECEx) International Conference 2014, Asian Banker Summit 2014, 16th Asian Congress of Architects 2014, 18th Asia Oil & Gas Conference 2015, Malaysian Institute of Accountants (MIA) Conference 2015 and International Forum on Disability Management 2016.

Speaking on the sidelines of IMEX Frankfurt, Alan Pryor, the Centre’s General Manager, attributed the wins to international associations and meeting planners’ continuing confidence in Malaysia as an attractive and value-for-money destination for business tourism and the Centre, as the country’s premier convention facility.

The wins come on the back of a record breaking performance in 2013 which the Centre closed on a high with 1,565 events; the most (events) held in a year since opening in June 2005; with high-profiled meetings the likes of the 3rd Women Deliver Global Conference (Women Deliver 2013), 4th Global Entrepreneurship Summit (GES 2013), 7th IAS Conference on HIV Pathogenesis, Treatment and Prevention (IAS 2013), 35th Asia Pacific Dental Congress (APDC 2013) and 2013 International Dragon Award (IDA 2013) Annual Conference.”

In addition to an 8.5% jump in number of events hosted, from 1,442, the venue welcomed 2 million delegates who contributed RM700 million (EUR157 million) in economic impact against 1.7 million delegates and RM590 million (EUR133 million) in the previous corresponding period (2012), concluded Pryor.

For 2014, among the major international events heading the Centre’s way are Toastmasters International’s 82nd Annual International Convention 2014; another first for the facility as this will be the first time in the organisation’s 89-year history its international convention is being held outside North America, 12th XXV FIG (International Federation of Surveyors) Congress 2014 and 20th ASEAN Federation of Cardiology Congress. These three events alone are likely to attract over 7,500 delegates to the Centre.

The Centre’s conference programmes have also been given a new dimension with the introduction of multicultural themed food & beverage offerings such as Sundown Hour Packages with a range of Asian-influenced mocktails and cocktails at TenOnCall and enhanced Day Conference Packages (DCPs) with a Difference. The latter gives clients the option to add some extra ‘colour’ and creativity to their conference with a choice of a Malay, Chinese, Indian, Western or Muhibbah (multi-ethnic) themed half or full-day programme. The enhanced DCPs with a Difference also come with free-flow coffee and tea for the duration of the event and chilled juices during coffee breaks. These value-adds are in addition to existing DCP offerings of ‘Snack on Arrival’, unrivalled IT and audio-visual support, free WiFi, a 10% discount for standing lunches and much more.

As the Centre gears up for its 10th anniversary in 2015, expansion plans are being finalised and consultation with industry partners is on-going which bodes well for completion of the development by early 2018. When operational, an additional 12,500 sqm of flexible and multipurpose space will be added to the Centre’s current 22,659 sqm and this will enable the Centre to host larger events and allow many of its recurrent clients to grow their events significantly. It will also give the Centre more flexibility with regard to accommodating larger international association meetings and holding concurrent events simultaneously.
