Tigerair Australia launches new Brisbane – Cairns services

The new daily return services between Brisbane and Cairns deliver 30% growth in Tigerair’s existing services to Cairns.

Tigerair Australia officially launches its new daily return services between Brisbane and Cairns, providing 30% growth in Tigerair’s existing services to Cairns as a result of consumer demand within the important budget and leisure travel markets.

The welcome news for the Queensland tourism industry closely follows the launch of Tigerair’s Brisbane base which opened last month, including two brand new aircraft – the second of which commences operations from the Brisbane base to facilitate new services and take the airline’s fleet in Australia to 13.

Travelling on the inaugural flight from Brisbane to Cairns which touched down at 15 April, Tigerair Australia CEO Rob Sharp said “Tigerair fares have been proven to stimulate air travel in Australia. As with all world class Australian destinations that Tigerair flies to, we have seen unprecedented demand from the leisure and budget community wanting quick and easy access to iconic gateway destinations such as Cairns.”

Today’s news also provides fantastic value fare options for Cairns residents wanting to travel to Queensland’s capital city.”

Contrary to the saying ‘life is a journey not a destination,’ now that it is both more affordable and convenient to fly directly between Brisbane to Cairns, you get the best of both worlds with a great value fare and more in your pocket when you get there to enjoy the end destination,” said Mr Sharp.

Mayor of Cairns, Bob Manning said the introduction of new flights demonstrated confidence in the Far North Queensland tourism industry.

We welcome Tigerair’s entry into the Brisbane to Cairns market and, of course, the people it will bring to our region,” Cr Manning said.

We expect this new level of competition to stimulate the domestic travel market and we look forward to showcasing our hospitality to visitors.”

Local member for Cairns and Assistant Minister for Tourism, Gavin King, said Tigerair’s new flights into Cairns would give local tourism a great boost and supported the Newman Government’s hard work to restore confidence in the region and increase visitation to the Far North.

This new aviation route from Brisbane to Cairns will help to deliver our goal to double annual overnight visitor expenditure in Queensland from $15 billion to $30 billion by 2020,” said Mr King.

Cairns Airport Chief Executive Officer, Kevin Brown, said “Cairns Airport welcomes the new services from Brisbane introduced today by our airline partner Tigerair. This is the third Tigerair route for Cairns, with their Melbourne and Sydney services already proving popular with visitors and locals alike. It brings Tigerair’s Cairns seat capacity to half a million per year. Cairns Airport’s marketing team is working closely with Tigerair to promote the new Brisbane service.”

Fares for the new Brisbane – Cairns service are on sale from midday 15 April (AEST) each way, as are fares for the second new route (between Brisbane – Darwin) also being launched by Tigerair later also at 15 April.

On 11 March 2014, Tigerair launched its Brisbane base and new services between Brisbane and Adelaide and Sydney and Adelaide. On 01 April, Tigerair launched new services between Sydney and Whitsunday Coast Airport.

Tigerair continues to evolve based on demand for our services and we’ve been very pleased with the popularity of our existing services between Cairns and Sydney and Cairns and Melbourne which launched in April 2013 and April 2012 respectively. Early sales on our new Brisbane – Cairns route have been pleasing, particularly with Easter holidays just around the corner and we expect the momentum to continue now that the route is operating,” concluded Mr. Sharp.
