Three new international routes by AirAsia from Johor Bahru International Airport

AirAsia expands in Johor Bahru turning the city into a new international gateway, particularly towards Indonesia with five destinations being now served including Lombok and Yogyakarta.

KUALA LUMPUR – AirAsia has introduced three new international routes from its hub in Johor Bahru, connecting the southern region to Yogyakarta and Lombok in Indonesia as well as to Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam. The airline indicated that it wants to provide the Johor Bahru community with more destination choices for travel.

AirAsia said the introduction of the new international routes was to enhance convenience plus savings, as the latest direct connectivity no longer required passengers to connect via Kuala Lumpur to these cities, the airline said in a statement here today.

AirAsia Commercial Head Spencer Lee said Johor Bahru is one of the airline’s important hubs, and it recognised the great potential in terms of route development and high demand for more international connectivity. AirAsia’s three new international routes from its JB hub connects to Yogyakarta four times weekly, Lombok three times weekly and four times weekly to Ho Chi Minh City. AirAsia connects now Johor Bahru Senai International Airport to 14 destinations including 8 domestic services. The airline is also planning to launch non stop flights from JB to Medan, strengthening the airport as a major gateway to Indonesia. Other destinations include Bandung, Jakarta and Surabaya.

Last year, international passengers traffic at Senai Airport rose by almost 700% to reach 138,000 travellers, while total traffic rose to 1,977,325 passengers, up by 43.3%. The result ends years of stagnating traffic at the airport and is due to the opening of a southern base by low cost carrier Firefly and the launch of new frequencies by Malindo Air, a joint venture between Indonesia’s Lion Air and National Aerospace and Defence Industries of Malaysia.
