The Landmark Mandarin Oriental presents spanish chef Eneko Atxa

Guests can experience Basque-rooted international haute cuisine combined with charity and art by three star Michelin chef at hotel's 2nd pop-up restaurant event.

HONG KONG – The Landmark Mandarin Oriental, Hong Kong is pleased to announce the second pop-up restaurant event of 2014. Chef Eneko Atxa, from Aziamendi Restaurant in southern Thailand and Azurmendi Restaurant in Bilbao, Spain will be in residence for three nights only, from 12 to 14 May to present an inspired seven course menu.

The youngest chef in Spain to obtain three Michelin stars, Chef Eneko will introduce his traditional Basque cuisine from the northern part of Spain exclusively at The Landmark Mandarin Oriental. Complementing the cuisine will be an eye-popping exhibition, by rising Indonesian artist, Uji Handoko Eko Saputro, better known as Hahan whose work provides a striking impact to Chef Eneko’s cuisine. Hahan’s witty commentary provides a well suited backdrop to Art Basel Hong Kong.

In addition, 15% of all revenue will be donated directly to the Inspirasia Foundation, which was set up by Mark Weingard, founder of the Aziamendi Restaurant and its host residence, Iniala Beach House, after losing his girl friend in the Bali bombings of 2002. The Foundation benefits societies across Indonesia, India and Thailand.

Hong Kong diners will have a rare authentic gastronomic journey to Northern Spain, and will be able to experience dishes from both Aziamendi and Azurmendi. Chef Eneko is known among fellow chefs for his fantastically creative mind and for skillfully carrying out his imaginative visions with precision and quirky charm. However, he credits the home-cooked meals of his tradition rich Basque childhood paving the way to his future success.

The evening’s menu will feature Eneko’s visually provocative flavours, and will begin with a four-canapé cocktail leading into a seven-course dinner served exclusively in the Tian and Di function rooms, where guests will be surrounded by a thought-provoking exhibition of sculptures, silk screens and embroidery from Uji Handoko Eko Saputro, inspired by anime, street art and pop culture.

In 2007, the Michelin Guide awarded Eneko’s first restaurant, Azurmendi with a star, citing his unique and natural cuisine. The second star followed in 2010 and the third in 2012. This latest achievement established Azurmendi as the first and only restaurant in Biscay Province, as Basque country is officially known, to earn this recognition, and made Eneko – then thirty- four years old – the youngest chef in Spain to earn three Michelin Stars.

In 2013, Eneko opened Aziamendi at the Iniala Beach House near Phuket. The restaurant is renowned for its blend of Spanish flavours with Thai twists.

“We are delighted to welcome Eneko Atxa into the kitchens of The Landmark Mandarin Oriental. For those who have yet to discover the Basque region and its culinary delights, hope is now in sight to taste its unique flavours and aromas,” says Chef Richard Ekkebus of the hotel’s two-Michelin starred Amber restaurant, which was also recently voted  “Best Restaurant in China” for the second year on the prestigious S. Pellegrino Asia’s ‘50 Best Restaurants’ List. “We can promise guests a fantastic event that combines art and fine dining plus the knowledge that they are also helping the very worthy Inspirasia Foundation,” he added.

This unique, three night only menu of a four canapés Champagne cocktail reception plus a seven-course dinner featuring Chef Eneko Atxa’s signature dishes, cocktail & seven wines is priced at HKD 3,288 per person. The event will be held from 12 to 14 May 2014 at the Tian and Di function rooms.
