Hotel Madera Hong Kong becomes first in Mainland China to gain TUV Rheinland Eco-Hotel Certification

Hotel Madera Hong Kong recently passed the TUV Rheinland Eco-Hotel certification process to become the first eco-hotel in Hong Kong and mainland China.

HONG KONG – A certification ceremony was held at the hotel on 28 February, with Mr Raymond Chan, COO of TUV Rheinland Hong Kong, and Ms Florence Ng, Head of Madera Hospitality Management, in attendance. Information on the hotel’s certification has been uploaded to TUV Rheinland’s online certificate database, Certipedia . Potential guests can see this information and assess the trustworthiness of the hotel’s eco-hotel claims and safety and quality statements on a neutral platform.

Mr Raymond Chan noted: “Hotel Madera Hong Kong operates in line with excellent performance standards and implements environmentally sustainable business practices, a sign of its commitment to various green programmes.  As a high-consumption industry, it is inevitable that the hotel and tourism sector would become caught up in the trend towards reduced carbon emissions and environmental protection.” Ms Florence Ng added: “We are pleased to become the first TUV Rheinland-certified Eco-Hotel in Hong Kong and the Chinese mainland in recognition of our concerted efforts to protect the environment.

TUV Rheinland conducted a rigorous audit of Hotel Madera Hong Kong, including a thorough site inspection, documentation review, interviews with staff and management, and implementation of an action plan. The audit process was completed and passed in December 2013. TUV Rheinland Eco-Hotel certification is an integrated certification programme tailored to the specific needs of the hotel and tourism industry. It is based on international standards such as ISO 14001, in addition to those covering energy savings, occupational health and safety, food safety and corporate social responsibility, and follows the concept of the 3Rs (Reuse, Reduce and Recycle). The certification team also examines ways of reducing costs and gaining market leverage.

TUV Rheinland’s Eco-tourism service offers accommodation- and tourism-related service providers with an opportunity to demonstrate their environmental friendliness and, at the same time, reduce operating costs by conserving valuable resources. We have now audited and/or successfully certified more than 1,000 hotels in 20+ countries.
