Myanmar will invest six million dollars to boost security

Recent bomb explosions in Yangon and Mandalay could deter tourists to come to Myanmar if the government fails to act rapidly…

YANGON- As Myanmar is due to welcome the Southeast Asian Games by December, some opponents are putting pressure on the government by blasting bombs. Some seven bombs detonated or have been discovered all across the country but most particularly in the former capital of Yangon, Myanmar largest metropolis. Since October 9, the blasts left two persons dead and four injured. An American tourist was wounded in the explosion of a bomb at the Traders Hotel, a first class property in the centre of the former capital.

The government is reacting swiftly to reassure both foreign investors and tourists. The Ministry of Hotels and Tourism already announced to reinforce security with more police forces or staff watching public areas in the country’s largest cities such as Yangon, Mandalay, Nay Pyi Daw but also at secondary destinations such as Taungoo or Sagaing. It will also organize seminars and training programs for hotels’ staff to learn how to eventually detect a potential threat.

According to Myanmar police chief, Zaw Win, eight people had been arrested following the blasts which he said were part of a campaign to scare off overseas investments. The Chief Police was nominating suspects from the Karen National Union, despite the KNU officially denying any involvement. It would possibly be dissidents from this ethnic rebel group.

Myanmar’s authorities are under increased pressure to solve problems of safety before the hosting of the SEA Games planned from 11 to 22 December 2013. Some 460 competions will be hosted during that time.
