Star Cruises to introduce SuperStar Gemini after a US$50m renovation

Luc Citrinot - 07 September 2012, 12:12

Renovated cruise ship SuperStar Gemini will visit some of Asia’s hottest cruise ports during the coming winter season.

HONG KONG - Star Cruises, the leading cruise line in Asia-Pacific, is launching the SuperStar Gemini, a 50,764-tonnage vessel which will soon undergo a US$ 50 million multi-faceted major refurbishment. The ship will be completely overhauled with upgraded navigational systems, new design in the cabins, restaurants, entertainment and recreational venues as well as revamped retail & body care outlets. Designed with an all-encompassing holiday experience in mind, SuperStar Gemini will immerse guests in a resort-at-sea environment adding an upmarket shopping experience that promises a broad range of duty-free watches, jewellery and fashion accessories.

SuperStar Gemini, formerly known as Norwegian Dream, will join SuperStar Virgo, SuperStar Aquarius, SuperStar Libra and Star Pisces to offer holiday experiences for guests from Asia-Pacific and beyond. The boat launch is due in early 2013 with SuperStar Gemini inaugurating a series of cruises from Penang (2 - 24 Jan) calling at Krabi / Phuket in 17 cruises; a 7 days / 6 nights special cruise (24 Jan – 1 Feb) to Singapore / Ho Chi Minh City / Nha Trang / Hong Kong; and from Sanya (1 Feb – 31 March) calling at Danang / Halong Bay / Hong Kong in 26 cruises.

From April to Oct 2013, the vessel will be based at its summer home port in Shanghai, offering over 30 cruises to a number of highly popular destinations including Cheju, Busan, Fukuoka, Nagasaki, Kumamoto, Naha, Ishigaki and Keelung. A number of special chartered cross-strait itineraries from Shanghai to Taiwan are in the pipeline, subject to approval by the authorities. These cruises are expected to be highly popular following the boom in travel between Mainland China and Taiwan. From Mid-October 2013, SuperStar Gemini will be based in Sanya (Hainan Island), calling at Vietnam ports amongst others.

Mr William Ng, Chief Operating Officer of Star Cruises, said, “As the leading Asia-Pacific cruise line, Star Cruises is proud to introduce another luxury vessel in Asia, serviced by our signature heart-warming Asian hospitality. SuperStar Gemini shows our ongoing effort to expand our footprint in the region from our well-established key markets in Hong Kong, Penang, Sanya, Singapore and Taiwan. With the strengthening of our fleet, we are well-positioned to further develop the Asia-Pacific cruise market by introducing world-class cruising experience as a holiday option to the growing North Asia holidaymakers.”

The refurbished SuperStar Gemini will house new onboard facilities including restaurants of Chinese, Asian and international cuisines, open-deck barbecue, show lounge, karaoke, spa & health club, beauty salon, children’s playroom and swimming pool. With a passenger capacity of 1,532, the vessel will house 766 guest cabins in a variety of layouts including ergonomic ocean view rooms, stylish junior suites and deluxe executive suites. The shopping area will comprise over 400 m2 of facilities, providing a premier duty-free shopping experience like no other SuperStar Gemini’s refurbishment follows SuperStar Virgo, SuperStar Aquarius and Star Pisces, which all underwent a make-over last year totalling over US$ 38 million. As part of Star Cruises’ ongoing refurbishment exercise, SuperStar Libra will also undergo a complete overhaul in early 2013.

Pool dirty , food disgusting cold and worse than hospital food . Limited time acailabity to eat . No tea making facilities. Can go on and on and on. Basketball area not finished unusable , nothing for children to do. No kids menus. No sanitizer anywhere , smelly , halls smell of wee . Stuck on here ATM and everyone wants to jump overboard . Unacceptable and will be contacting media when home. Have a large number of signed complaints from passengers ( after one day) . Will be posting all our photos on FB. .

new again cruise ship
What would you do if you spend RM 9000 to be treated like a thief before you left the venue and nothing have been advertised as it promised .
Recently a planned holiday to go to a three days two nights cruise ship with family of ten who I have not had the opportunity to see since 2007. A trip that we all were excited about and looking forward to.
When we boarded to the ship to find the whole things were not just dissappointed but at time humiliating especially before we were disembarked into the customs.
As a consumers we spend money and time to seek experience that to bring joy and relaxation. What do you do when you find the information or advertisement have been misleading and misrepresentated? The worst you can't buy back the time you spend.
The reason why I writing this letter is to advise everybody especially in Asia countries who are consider to pay for a cruiseshipe for whatever purpose you are seeking for. Please think twice or threes or even better bpycort the service until they ratify their business ethic to ensure the pleasure of customer come first. Asian countries need to stand up and make a stand if the customer service have not been performance to it benefit and value of our money.
I left with anger and shock of the ways we been treated before leaving the cruise ship. They are so much to say and did not even know how to begin.

1. Photos with idiot mascot were very frustrating. After a day of queuing it was the last thing we needed. Very irritating and completely moronic. Fire the idiot who came up with that idea.
2. No wireless Internet.
3. Wobbly tables in the barbecue restaurant.
4. Water temperature was dangerously hot in the shower. Very dangerous for children and the elderly.
5. No maps or displays showing ships position or rate of progress.
6. Refit work continuing, noisy and smelly.
7. Aft pool not working.
8. Not happy about surrendering my passport when boarding the ship.
9. Having to teach Bar Staff how to make simple drinks like a Gin & Tonic.
10. Why were the corridors shut off prior to collecting passports? Another idiot idea, funneling everyone into a bottleneck and creating more frustration with waiting.
11. No bacon
12. Spa pools not working.
13. Very limited choices for breakfast.
14. Should have had a non - smoking bar.
15. Phone directory needs to be posted next to cabin phones.
16. Disembarkation was a complete fiasco, from turning off the air conditioning to forcing the entire passenger compliment downtown arrow staircases and bing told for the third time my card needed to be checked.

Wow we wish we had read these bad comments before we boarded . We are now stuck on a 6 night star Gemini ( apparently 50 million makeover) not enough time to list all complaints however they will be hearing from 80 % of other passengers for sure .
Food is awful , eg last night buffet = options Mutton stew , raw chicken and soggy cold battered fish
Breakfast is waiting in bay Marie at 530 am however not served until 8am
No ware to get tea and coffee before 8 am
Impossible to get a drink at bars and then if you are lucky the staff don't know how to make it
Renovations still being done , painting carpet etc
Corridors smell like urine
Lots of people trying to move rooms as air con is noisy
Public toilets are a discrace
Pool was green and dirty for the first day
Italian restaurant serves only Asian
Not hand sanitisers in buffets entrance

Just to name a few . Do not book this cruise for sure

Don't be fooled this isn't the old Gemini as we have travelled on before. The pictures advertising the new cruises
are deceiving. In fact it's the refurbishmnent of the Norweigen Dream (re named Gemini) a ship twice
the size of the old Gemini. This heading photo of the previous Gemini should be immediately replaced with a shot of the liner that is actually making the cruises. We loved Superstar Gemini and it's fantastic services as we knew it and taken out of commission in 2009. Yes, and I hope the new ship lives up to the standard, check before you commit to a booking.
