WTTC press lunch to celebrate the launch of WTTC’s report on the Chinese province of Hainan

The event will take place in The Dorchester Hotel Park Lane, China Tang Restaurant on Monday, 17 September.

The World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC), the Authority on Travel & Tourism, launches a special report about Hainan Province, China. Hainan is primarily known for its stunning coastline and beach resorts, which have given it the name ‘Hawaii of the East’, Hainan offers a wealth of other attractions that are expected to prove increasing draws for visitors – international as well as domestic.

In December 2009, China’s State Council issued a decree that Hainan – the largest Special Economic Zone in China – was to be elevated into a world-class international tourist resort destination by 2020 and the Provincial Government is now well on the way to reaching these goals.

Total visitor arrivals in Hainan were almost 26 million in 2010, representing a growth of 14% per annum in the 15 years from 1995. The direct contribution of Hainan’s Travel & Tourism is estimated at 8.5% of GDP, and it is forecast to rise to 12.4% in 2021. With 12.6% average annual growth in tourism expenditure excepted over the 10-year period 2011-2021, Hainan is predicted to outperform all the world’s national economies by this measure.

As a result, no other destination in the world – whether province or country – has attracted such huge interest from so many different sectors of the industry, including virtually all the leading international hotel brands, in such a short space of time.

The speakers of the event are David Scowsill, President & CEO of WTTC and Mr LU Zhiyuan, Assistant Governor of Hainan Province & Director General of Hainan Provincial Tourism Development Commission.
