A new ferry route linking Macao directly to a ferry harbor at the Hong Kong International Airport came in service on Monday. With a 40-minute jetboat trip on the new route, passengers can spare not only an hour of ride on road from the present ferry terminal in the downtown of Hong Kong to the airport, but also customs routines at the airport.

Ao Man Long, secretary for Transportation and Public Works withthe Macao Special Administrative Region government, said that the opening of the ferry route marks the start of a new era on the building of a sea transportation network between Hong Kongand Macao.

Macao can benefit from the huge radiating capacity of the Hong Kong airport, which can reach over 130 cities in the world. The transportation network jointly built by Hong Kong and Macao would magnify the customer source for the growing gaming-oriented tourism in Macao, said Ao.

Also another ferry route opened on Monday between the Hong Kong airport to Shenzhen, south China`s Guangdong Province. The ferry network taking shape in the Pearl River Delta economic area, which encompasses Guangdong province, the world`s major financial center of Hong Kong and Asia`s largest gaming market of Macao, is estimated to handle over 15 million passengers each year.
