Malaysia will officially host the 46th ITA-AITES World Tunnel Congress (WTC) 2020 next year as the prestigious event has been handed over during the WTC 2019, held in Naples, Italy.

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia – Malaysia will host the 46th ITA-AITES World Tunnel Congress (WTC) 2020, from 15 to 21 May, next year. The event has been handed over in the recent WTC 2019, held in Naples, Italy.

Locally organised by the Institution of Engineers, Malaysia (IEM), WTC 2020 is supported by the Malaysia Convention & Exhibition Bureau (MyCEB

Datuk Zulkefli Hj. Sharif, Chief Executive Officer of MyCEB recaps the momentous occasion when the local team aced the bid in 2017. “The competition was stiff, but Team Malaysia was still able to convince ITA. This is attributed to the strong local organisation, IEM. The bid process called for very thorough proposals and mirroring the Malaysian hospitality, we included multi-lingual documents that instantly connected to both decision makers and members,” he said.

Datuk Zulkefli also announced that the seven days event which is slated to take place from 15-21 May 2020, is expected to generate an economic impact close to RM 21 million from more than 1,500 delegates.

WTC, which is owned by the International Tunneling and Underground Space Association (ITA) seeks to explore latest innovations, trends and advances in all areas of tunneling sustainably. The highly-anticipated annual event brings together engineers, designers, construction professionals and best expertise in its field.

WTC2020’s Organising Chairman, Ir. Dr. Ooi Teik Aun said the tunneling and underground space development in Malaysia has been impressive. “We have progressed tremendously especially in the past decade. From our mega dam projects, road systems to transportation and more, Malaysia has carved an impression.”

He added: “I believe with the arrival of WTC 2020, we will undoubtedly increase a great deal when it comes to knowledge and innovation. For Malaysia as a destination, I am also confident that we will deliver the best to our delegates. They can look forward to an enjoyable trip.”

He continued: “When bringing a specialised business event as such to the country, the assistance of our counterparts such as MyCEB is imperative in ensuring that all is smooth from the bidding process to post-event. The dynamism of the team working on this has opened a whole new spectrum for IEM in bidding and winning events for the country. Business events definitely play a vital role for the country’s economic roadmap.”

WTC 2020 will be themed “Innovation and Sustainable Underground Serving Global Connectivity”. The Congress focuses on multiple technical paper presentations, tunneling training courses, poster presentations, the ITA-AITES General Assembly, technical visits to ongoing tunneling projects in Malaysia, and interesting exhibitions by companies from all over the world presenting their latest tunneling solutions, innovations and technologies.
