Wakayama: Shirahama is the most expensive summer destination in Japan

The survey compared the cost of lodging across 40 popular destinations in Japan during the month of August. With an average rate of $242 for the cheapest available double room, Shirahama in western Japan emerges as the country’s most expensive place to stay.

NEW YORK – Shirahama, a resort town located in the Wakayama Prefecture, is the most expensive summer destination in Japan, according to a new survey conducted by TravelMag.com.
 
The survey compared the cost of lodging across 40 popular destinations during the month of August. The results were compiled based on average rates for the cheapest available double room in each location. Only accommodations rated at least 3 stars was considered.
 
With an average rate of $242 for the cheapest available double room, Shirahama in western Japan emerges as the country’s most expensive place to stay. Two mountain towns come second and third: Karuizawa, located at the foot of the Mount Asama volcano in the Nagano Prefecture, and Hakone, famous for its spectacular views of nearby Mount Fuji, with average rates of $234 and $232, respectively.
 
Japan’s capital city Tokyo ranks in the middle ground, with an average rate of $91 per night. At the bottom end of the scale, the least expensive destination according to the survey is Kagoshima, a seaside city on Japan’s Kyushu Island, where you are likely to find accommodation for around $50 per night.
 
The following table shows the 10 most expensive Japanese destinations for accommodation for August 2016. The prices shown reflect the average rate for each location’s cheapest available double room, in accommodations rated at least 3 stars, for the period spanning 1–31 August 2016.
