ZUJI poll reveals 1 in 5 Singapore-based travellers have encountered ghosts and spirits while travelling!

The latest ZUJI-dex travel report flags Singapore-based travellers’ holiday irks, quirks and qualms, revealing that many of us share similar pet peeves.

SINGAPORE – ZUJI, the region’s leading online travel agent announced the findings to its third travel insights report that profiles the habits and preferences of Singapore-based travellers.

The ongoing initiative, which was launched in November 2013, details Singapore travellers’ preferences obtained by polls, and travel insights based on booking data from ZUJI.

Providing a clearer understanding of the poll, Chua Hui Wan, CEO for ZUJI Singapore, said: “The ZUJI-dex report was developed to uncover deeper insights into Singapore-based travellers’ holiday behaviours and preferences. This is the third report we have issued which divulges the interesting pet peeves of people when they travel abroad. It’s interesting to see similarities among these bugbears.

Themed ‘Holiday Irks and Quirks’, 1,629 Singapore-based travellers participated in the poll, which asked them to detail their greatest vacation woes. The following interesting findings were uncovered:
· Singapore-based travellers love jet setting, which makes flight cancellations a worst nightmare (43%), followed by having an uneasy stomach that requires 24/7 washroom access (34%).
· As they say, it’s always better to be safe than sorry, but some Singapore-based travellers would rather risk it with less than half (45%) buying travel insurance. To add, those travellers that do buy insurance only seem to get it for certain trips (30%), or when it’s affordable (9%) as they’d rather not waste valuable funds.
· 2 in 3 Singapore-based travellers love beach holidays despite their jitters about the sea. Their biggest woe was listed as being swept away by a riptide (35%). However, funnily enough, 30% of travellers would rather be dumped by a wave and caught in their birthday suit than dragged out to sea!
· Finding out that the hotel is full and the booking isn’t found is Singapore-based travellers’ worst hotel irk (39%). Discovering that they’ve been scammed (27%) was the next major concern.
· More than a third (38%) of Singapore-based travellers are terrified of creepy crawlies, making it the top of the list for worst hotel room qualms. Strange noises and deadly silence (26%) were travellers’ next worry, followed by odd stains and smells around the carpeting (24%).
· Fun fact: Guys are squeamish too! 36% of those who fear creepy crawlies are men!
· Singapore-based travellers are a superstitious bunch! 60% believe in performing their own rituals when travelling. Knocking on the hotel room doors before entering was the top habit (47%). This is commonly known to be a sign of respect to the spirits.
· We’re also controlling! 27% were strict about the fact that they had to pack their own suitcase and weren’t willing to have anyone else do the job. 32% said they would never go abroad with an empty suitcase and buy everything at the destination.
· Spooky! 1 in 5 Singapore-based travellers have encountered ghost and spirits while travelling! Unusual people with heavy tattoos and piercings were the second most bizarre sighting they witnessed while travelling (15%), with odd local customs rituals and festivals (14%) also making the cut.
· Unusual activities were most seen across Asia with Thailand (15%), Malaysia (5%) and Indonesia (5%), taking the top 3 spots. Strangely, 1 in 6 travellers experienced peculiar activities in the Land of Smiles, Thailand.

Hui Wan noted, “The clearest observation from this poll is that Singapore-based travellers still love to explore oversees, despite their vacation peeves. It’s interesting to see what irks our travellers, but also encouraging that they continue to fly to destinations.

The following travel insights were based on ZUJI booking data from January to March 2014 and reaffirm Singapore-based travellers’ love of regional shopping destinations and interest in exploring new, less trodden cities, despite their qualms.
· Singapore-based travellers continue to travel, even to unique destinations. The top 3 new flight destinations this year include Lothian, Christchurch and Nagoya, instead of the usual trips to Bangkok and Seoul. New leading hotel destinations include Surabaya, Phuket and Sydney.
· Singapore-based travellers often jet-set to shopping destinations, like the top 3  hot spots including Hong Kong, Bangkok and Shanghai.
· Beach woes don’t get in the way of enjoying sandy escapes with Singapore’s top 3 beach getaways including Denpasar, Phuket and Koh Samui.
· Last minute bookings aren’t popular. The majority of Singapore-based travellers going on a short getaway, book approximately 30 days in advance, whereas those who are going further abroad book 45 – 60 days in advance.
· Despite Thailand, Malaysia and Indonesia claiming the top 3 eeriest travel spots, interestingly, Malaysia and Thailand are two of the ZUJI Top 10 Hotel and Package destinations.
